What do Brazil’s squad numbers tell us about Tite’s World Cup plans

With great power comes great responsibility.

For Brazilian footballers there’s no greater power than wearing the no.10 shirt at a World Cup.

Brazil released their squad numbers to be worn in Russia, with Neymar handed the honour of wearing the no.10 shirt, as he did four years ago at the 2014 World Cup.

Neymar will be looking to add to his four World Cup goals and get closer to Pele, the most iconic Brazilian no.10 ever, who scored 12 times across four different tournaments.

Talking of goals, Gabriel Jesus has been handed the no.9 shirt previously worn by Ronaldo- the highest Brazilian goalscorer at a World Cup.

Liverpool striker Roberto Firmino has had to settle for the no.20 shirt, indicating that Jesus will lead the line in Tite’s 4-3-3 formation.

Philippe Coutinho will wear the no.11 shirt, following in the footsteps of Romario and (cover your eyes, David Seaman) Ronaldinho.

As for the goalkeepers, Roma’s Alisson will wear the no.1 shirt with Man City’s Ederson wearing no.23.

Ederson has only been capped once by Brazil while Alisson has appeared 24 times, so it’s little surprise Tite looks to have gone with experience.

Marcelo won’t wear the no.6 shirt, as he did in 2014, and will instead take the no.12 he wears at Real Madrid.

Marquinhos, who’s likely to be in the starting XI, will wear the no.13 shirt, so let’s hope he’s not superstitious.
