Paul Pogba revealed in secret chats to Jermain Defoe he knows has to do more for Manchester United

JERMAIN DEFOE has revealed he had a secret conversation with Paul Pogba where the Frenchman admitted he “has to do more” at Manchester United.

The former world record signing flopped terribly on Sunday as he looked half the player while United lost 3-2 to Brighton in their second Premier League game.

But the 25-year-old was one of the stand-out players at this summer’s World Cup in Russia as France marched to victory in Moscow.

Pogba even scored in the final, in a passage of play that will be remembered for sensational through ball he played to Kylian Mbappe.

But the Frenchman has yet to win the Premier League title at United or the glittering prize of the Champions League.

Defoe said on Goals on Sunday: “It’s funny, I spoke to Paul when they came down to Bournemouth.

“He knows he needs to do more, he said to me ‘I want to do more, it’s not as easy as people think’.

“There’s times where he struggled with his fitness and he’s played in games not 100 per cent fit.

“But I think he’s one of those characters where he knows he needs to do well, he’s got the right attitude.”

And attitude was one thing Pogba pointed out in the aftermath of United’s shocking loss to the Seagulls.

The £89million midfielder held his hands up over his own performance — and the Red Devils’ skipper was the worst of a bad bunch at the Amex Stadium.

Pogba said: “I put myself first, my attitude wasn’t right. I should have done much better, made less mistakes and controlled the game.

“Brighton had more hunger. Our performance was not good enough.

“It’s twice in a row we’ve lost against Brighton and that shouldn’t happen. Last year we had almost the same attitude and it’s not right.

“I’m disappointed with my own performance and the team performance. The attitude we had was not like we wanted to beat them.

“I know we cannot always play very well, but at least the attitude has to be right and we missed that today.

“It was a bad performance from all of us. We have to wake up for the next game.”

United host Tottenham in their next Premier League clash at Old Trafford a week today.
