Liverpool’s Jon Flanagan has received a 12-month community order for assaulting his girlfriend

Jon Flanagan was handed a 12 month community order and 40 hours of unpaid work for assaulting his girlfriend.

The decision was passed at Liverpool magistrates court and Flanagan will be monitored for a year but was lucky not to end up behind bars.

The Liverpool full back had admitted the offence, which occurred in Liverpool’s city centre in the early hours of December 22.

An earlier appearance in court revealed that the assault involved a “kick” and both Flanagan and his girlfriend were drunk on a Christmas night out.

The 25-year-old was sentenced for assault by beating, an offence which carries a maximum of six months in jail, and will now complete have to complete the year long community order with 15 rehabilitation days.

The judge called it an “unpleasant episode” but took into account Flanagan having no prior convictions.

Flanagan has made just one appearance for the Reds this season during Liverpool’s defeat to Leicester City in the Carabao Cup.

The homegrown talent came through the academy to break into the first team in the 2010/11 season.

Since then he has gone on to make 40 appearances for Liverpool and scored one goal.

He joined Burnley on loan last season and made six appearances for the Clarets.

The passing of this sentence leaves question marks over the defender’s future prospects at Liverpool and as a professional footballer.

Flanagan has played for England at every age group from under-19 and was called up to the senior side in 2014 for a friendly against Ecuador.
